4-H Programs

Our programs and projects teach young people how to put their heads, hearts, hands and health to work in their own lives and in their communities. Becoming a teen in the 4‑H program opens up a whole new set of opportunities. Read more about the groups and activities available at the club, county, state, and national levels. APRIL

 Livestock Symposium

Date: April 1, 2017

Location: Rutgers Cook College

Description: An educational symposium open to all 4-H Livestock members.  A wide variety of valuable and interesting agricultural topics will be discussed and there will be many opportunities for hands-on experience.

You will need to will need to complete and sign the Registration Form, which is due by March 15, 2017.

Science-sational Day

Date: April 1, 2017 – 9:15 am to 1:30 pm

Location: 4-H Center

Description: Youth in grades 1-5 are invited to explore new ideas, put their designs to the test, and discover a new love for science. Registration is required.

Spring Carnival

Date: April 22, 2017, 10:00 am until 2:00 pm

Location: Ted Blum 4-H Center

Description: The Somerset County 4-H Association is pleased to invite the public to its 2nd Annual Spring Carnival. Admission for the carnival is $12.00 per participant, which is all-inclusive for games, activities, crafts, and prizes. Adults are free. There will also be food for sale such as hot dogs, pizza, cotton candy, and popcorn. View the flyer for more information.

4-H Fashion Review

CloverCon

Dates: Sunday, May 21, 2017

Location: 4-H Center

Description:  The 4-H Anime & Manga Club: Village Hidden in the Clovers is hosting for their 7th year CloverCon, a mini-convention all about Japanese traditional & pop culture plus all the interconnecting fandoms. There will be panels, games & tournaments/contests involving Pokémon, Super Smash Brothers Melee, cosplay, table-top games & so much more!  Lots to do & see at our 4-H B.I.G. fundraiser that’s family-friendly, fun & even educational!  To register before May 1, see the pre-registration page  or print the flyer. JUNE

State Presentations

Date: June 10, 2017

Location:

Description: Somerset County 4-H Members, grades 8-13 who received a blue ribbon at the county presentation program will be invited to attend this event. Registration is required.

 

TOPS Camp

Dates: June 26-30, 2017

Location: 4-H Center

Description: Educational day camp for 1-5th graders.  Space fill quickly, so don’t wait!  Cost is $200 for the week.

We are also looking for volunteer counselors for the week.  If you have finished 8th -13th grade, then you should come inspire  1st-5th graders at TOPS Camp! Download the application now and return it by April 21, 2017.

JANUARY

Teen Winter Camp Weekend

Dates: January 2018 (register by December 2017)

Description: Members in grades 8-13 will have lots of fun at LG Cook Camp.  This year, Somerset County will go with teens from Passaic, Ocean & Warren Counties.  This is always a popular event, so get your applications in NOW!  Cost for the whole weekend is only $60.  Scholarships are available.

Small Animal Awards

Date:  January 2018 – 2pm to 7pm

Location: 4-H Center

Description: All Somerset County 4-H members who are currently enrolled in a a Small Animal Club should attend with their family members.

Horse Awards

Date:  January 2018 – 5pm to 9pm

Location: 4-H Center

Description: All Somerset County 4-H members who are currently enrolled in a Horse Club should attend with their family members.

Prep Family New Years Party

Date:  January 2018 – 5pm to 7pm

Description: This event is a great opportunity for all the prep members and their families to celebrate the New Year and to meet preppers from other clubs. The Prep New Year’s party will include a DJ, crafts, tattoos and a pot luck dinner. The night will end with games, ice cream sundaes and lots of confetti!

4-H Family Night

Date:  January 2018 – 5:30pm to 7:30 pm

Description: This event is free for all 4-H Families sponsored by the Somerset County 4-H Association and they will be serving up some fun & spaghetti!  New 4-H Members (1-3 years) will have fun meeting our 4-H families, hearing about other clubs & other 4-H opportunities,  beyond the club experience, and enjoying a delicious pasta meal.  Experienced 4-H Members and Leaders will have fun meeting our newer 4-H families & promoting your club/activities and enjoying a delicious pasta meal. All participants are asked to bring a donation for the food bank.

FEBRUARY

Become a Citizen Science Ambassador

Date: February 1, 2017 – Mid-May

Description: Are you age 13-18 and love citizen science? We invite you to be a leader in spreading the word about citizen science and how it can empower youth to help change the world. For more information: http://www.somersetcounty4h.org/become-a-citizen-science-ambassador/.

Food and Fun Event

Date: February  2018 – 4:00 pm

Location: 4-H Center

Description: All clubs are welcome to pick a theme, a menu and present a meal.  Individual members prepare a dish for the judge.  The club is judged on teamwork, creativity and menu.  Past themes have been a super bowl party, a sleep-over and under-the-sea. What will your club come up with?

North Jersey 4-H Teen Conference (NJTC)

Location: Regency Hotel in Pompton Plains, NJ (we will offer transportation to and from).

Description: 4-H members in grades 8-13 are invited to join other 4-H members from around North Jersey at the NJTC. This conference is a leadership weekend planned by teens for teens. There are workshops, a field trip, community service and a dance.   Cost is $185pp,  $175 for 2nd sibling, but scholarships are available.

MARCH

Discover the Leader in You

Location: Agricultural Museum of NJ on Cook Campus, New Brunswick

Description: 4-H member in grades 6-8 are invited to attend this leadership conference.  You will have fun, meet new friends & develop leadership skills that you can utilize at home, in school, in your 4-H club and your community.  The conference will include a guest speaker and interactive workshops. The cost is $35, which includes snacks, lunch and program supplies.

County Public Presentations

Date: March 20-24, 2017

Description: All members are encouraged to participate.  Members 8th grade and older who score a blue ribbon are invited to compete at the state level at Rutgers in June. Sign-up is required.
